bus_boy Posted September 8, 2006 Report Posted September 8, 2006 Hi all. I am hoping to replace my broken AC pipe this weekend, but in order to do it I apparently have to remove both the front bumper and the front panel. Is this a difficult thing? Once off, access to the pipe, which has a push fit connector in the nearside front wing and a bolted connector on the hi pressure side of the compressor, is easy. The push fit connector is a triple 'o' ring affair and I have been advised that refrigerant jelly is used during assembly. Snag is - I don't have any of this. Anyone suggest an alternate lubricant! I have ruled out veg oil, 3 in 1, and WD40. This only really leaves Vasaline and KY Jelly. Thanks Quote
jwilliams Posted September 8, 2006 Report Posted September 8, 2006 Cant help with the removal of the bumper or panel but have you thought of using a silicone lube? You can get one at the DIY stores in the plumbing section as they use it to put toilet pan pipes bends into the soil pipes. It is quite thin like a light oil but is very slippery A thicker alternative is silicone grease which can be obtained at a dive shop as we divers use it to stop the salt water getting at knife blades etc Quote

MrT Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 I am not convinced you need to remove the front bumper and panel to do this. You may get away with just removing the radiator grills and possibly the bar above it that the bonnet locks to. You might then be able to remove the pipe. There is a fair bit of space between the condensor and bumper to work in. I had my condensor replaced last week and the bumper was not removed to do this. To remove the condensor the Ford TIS advises drilling holes in the panel to get to the bolts. Again I am not clear on the pipe fittings as the cars differ slightly but to get at the compressor on my car, you need to remove the engine undertray which means raising the car. Quote
jkspoff Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 Mine had a new condensor and radiator fitted, with removal of most A/C pipes without the need to remove the front bumper at all, it was done by just removing the grill area. I'm not sure how they did it, but I just know it can be done. I believe it can be manoevered through the engine bay from above down, and the pipes replaced from below, with tray removed. Quote
